The CS770 is a midsize ghettoblaster from 1981 with a very smooth and stable tape deck.

Aiwa CS-770

The CS-770 boombox was built by Aiwa in 1981. By that time, Aiwa had begun moving away from smaller radios like the TPR series, in favor of larger, flashier models. As a result, there's more empty space inside, and there's no inner chassis....just a front and rear case with the circuit boards attached. Between the speakers, there's a small digital screen for the programmable music search feature, and a button for Dynamic Super Loudness (Aiwa's bass-boosting circuit).

I've seen several conflicting output power claims for this model, but if you look at the schematic, it has one Panasonic AN7146 amplifier chip (the CS-880 has two). And according to the spec sheet for that amp, this boombox will make about 2x5 watts at 10% distortion. So, this isn't a very powerful model, BUT it has the same fantastic tape deck used in the CS-880......a very smooth soft-touch unit that runs more stable than many home hifi decks do!

Specifications:

  • Tape frequency response: 35 to 16,000 Hz when using Metal tape
  • Line In sensitivity/impedance: 150mV/47kΩ
  • Phono sensitivity/impedance: 4mV/47kΩ
